The Legend of “Briste”, the Scottish Chained Unicorn.
The Scottish chained unicorn, represented in Scotlands coat of arms, is depicted wrapped in chains and was believed to be the strongest of all animals. Wild, untamed and can only be humbled by a virgin maiden. The entrapment of a unicorn would symbolize the power of Scottish Kings, being strong enough to capture and tame one.
Briste was lured by a maiden only to be tricked and trapped by men and was chained to the ground in the town square to flaunt and display the achievement--Representing the power and strength of the Scottish King.
Yet, even chains could not confine the creature and were eventually broken by Briste in the dead of night. The unicorn again free to roam; Except this time, like a battle scar, with a permanent entanglement of the chain.
Briste is pictured here the moment he begins to break his chains.
